Ghosts shimmer through many of these pieces. Dowland’s great lute-song emerges and fades away in Britten’s guitar masterpiece. In Schnittke’s quintet memories of the composer’s mother prove harder and harder to retrieve. Schumann claimed the theme of his Ghost variations was dictated to him by Schubert and Mendelssohn’s ghosts, just before he threw himself into the Rhine. Lightening the mood, Tchaikovsky’s brilliant, whirling (and very Russian) ‘souvenir’ affirms a supreme love of Life.
