This concert dedicated with love to the memory of Hugh Vickers of Oxford, lifelong music lover and opera critic.

Our festival finale aims for the wide horizon. Beethoven reaches for the impossible, the superhuman, in his astonishing fugue. The violinist Joachim heard nothing less than the sea in Schumann’s ‘glorious waves of sound’. Mahler sings of a love so overwhelming that it blots out the world. And Strauss’s magnum opus sums up not only his own music, but the history of German music from Beethoven onwards.
