Concert followed by Friends’ Reception
Here are two towering masterpieces from the end of Schubert’s tragically short life – the greatest work (by far) ever written for piano duet, and his last string quartet which seems to burst beyond the possibilities of a mere four instruments. They are framed by three contrasting soundscapes from the twentieth century. Bartók defies his final illness with a raw, red-blooded sonata; Messiaen – in the hell of a WW2 concentration camp – exalts the joyous freedom of birds; and Tavener’s faith anticipates eternal life.
