Dirk Mommertz – Piano

Dirk was born in Mainz.  His family were ‘passionate hobby musicians’.  He studied the violin for five years but ‘soon became aware that piano playing is much more comfortable with hands like mine’. ‘I continuously bothered my parents to take me to a piano teacher.’  He went on to study in Karlsruhe, Frankfurt, Paris and Cologne.

He has received many international awards as a pianist, and he has been a member of the Fauré Quartet since its foundation in 1995.  Their prize-winning recordings for Deutsche Grammophon have singled the group out as a ground-breaking ensemble equally at home with the classics as well as more experimental, contemporary repertoire.  ‘A piano quartet can create the most diverse and wonderful soundworld with a hugely rich range.  I feel happy that we have made the marriage of four work for almost twenty years and hope that we continue to grow together in interesting directions.’

Dirk is Artistic Director of the ‘Festival Spring Rügen’.  From 2000 to 2005 he lectured in piano at the Musikhochschule Karlsruhe. He is now professor of chamber music at the Folkwang University Essen and at the Hochschule für Musik Nuremberg.
